Our Mission

The global challenge
of perioperative

We are committed to training and mentoring the next generation of researchers, clinicians, and healthcare leaders, ensuring a continuous flow of innovation and expertise in perioperative care.

Our History

We remain committed
to advancing

As we continue to expand our reach, we remain committed to advancing the science of perioperative care and addressing the evolving needs of patients, clinicians, and researchers alike.

Our Values

Guide every aspect of our work

At the Perioperative Care Research Network, our core values guide every aspect of our work:

We believe in the strength of partnerships. We foster an inclusive, multidisciplinary approach to research, bringing together experts, clinicians, and patient partners to achieve our collective goals.

We are dedicated to conducting high-quality, impactful clinical trials that provide evidence to inform and improve perioperative care practices. Our commitment to scientific rigor drives our pursuit of knowledge and innovation.

We hold ourselves to the highest standards of transparency in our processes and decision-making. Accountability for our actions ensures trust within our network and the broader healthcare community.

We champion equitable access to clinical trials, ensuring that the benefits of our research reach diverse populations. Our work is grounded in principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion, addressing the needs of all patients, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status.

We place patients at the heart of our research. Engaging patient partners in all aspects of our work ensures that our research aligns with their needs, priorities, and experiences.

Our Initiative

The Perioperative Care Research Network

We are dedicated to advancing the field of perioperative medicine through innovative research, collaboration, and education. We are committed to improving patient outcomes by conducting high-impact clinical trials that reduce perioperative risks, particularly those related to major cardiac complications during and after surgery.

Every year, millions of people undergo major non-cardiac surgeries globally, and a significant portion experience severe postoperative complication.

Our initiative seeks to address this issue by focusing on understanding and mitigating risks that can lead to life-threatening outcomes.

Through rigorous trials and ground-breaking research, we aim to improve clinical practices, enhance patient safety, and contribute to global advancements in perioperative care.

We are committed to training and mentoring the next generation of researchers, clinicians, and healthcare leaders, ensuring a continuous flow of innovation and expertise in perioperative care.

Governance Structure

Dynamic and inclusive environment

The governance structure of the Perioperative Care Research Network (PCRN) is designed to ensure effective leadership, accountability, and collaboration across all levels of the organization.

It fosters a dynamic and inclusive environment, where leadership roles are clearly defined, decision-making processes are transparent, and continuous improvements are encouraged.

Leadership Team

Facilitates smooth transitions

The co-Chairpersons are tasked with guiding the Network’s strategic decisions, overseeing collaborations, and representing the Network externally. They also play a crucial role in maintaining open communication and fostering an inclusive and collaborative culture within the Network.
The election process for Leadership Team members is transparent, with clear eligibility criteria based on membership, academic qualifications, and demonstrated commitment to the Network’s mission.

Operation Committee

Works closely with the Leadership

The Operation Committee works closely with the Leadership Team to oversee the day-to-day functioning and strategic development of the Network.

Composed of two co-Chairpersons, 5-7 additional members, 1-2 patient partners, and a Network Research Coordinator, the committee ensures effective communication, resource allocation, and the mentorship process.

The committee’s responsibilities include producing financial and summary reports, reviewing membership nominations, and ensuring adherence to the established Code of Conduct.
Additionally, the committee allocates resources and funding to support the Network’s activities and can create subcommittees to address specific goals or tasks as needed.

Membership Overview

different levels of engagement & expertise

The PCRN is committed to fostering inclusivity and diversity by bringing together a wide range of stakeholders from various academic disciplines, professions, and backgrounds. This includes researchers, scholars, practitioners, international experts, and patient partners.

Education and Training

Research & clinical practice

The PCRN fosters a culture of continuous learning, collaboration, and professional development among its members.

We are dedicated to enhancing research and clinical practice through diverse educational initiatives.

The Network regularly offers training to promote awareness and understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion. This ensures members are equipped with the knowledge and skills to contribute to an inclusive and respectful research environment.

PCRN emphasizes adherence to high ethical standards across all research activities. We prioritize honesty, fairness, accountability, and openness in research, aligning with the Tri-Agency Framework on Responsible Conduct of Research (2021). Our goal is to ensure that members conduct research with integrity throughout the project lifecycle—from design to dissemination.

The Network has created and maintain a registry of perioperative fellowship programs in Canada to support early career researchers, trainees, and medical students. The registry will be regularly updated to include new opportunities and remove outdated ones, fostering access to valuable training resources.

PCRN is committed to developing a structured mentorship framework that connects experienced researchers (mentors) with those seeking guidance (mentees). This process aims to facilitate career development, knowledge transfer, and the growth of the perioperative research community.
