The governance structure of the Perioperative Care Research Network (PCRN) is designed to ensure effective leadership, accountability, and collaboration across all levels of the organization.
It fosters a dynamic and inclusive environment, where leadership roles are clearly defined, decision-making processes are transparent, and continuous improvements are encouraged.
The structure is composed of two key components: the Leadership Team and the Operation Committee. Together, they guide the strategic direction, oversee day-to-day operations, and ensure that the Network’s goals align with broader objectives, such as those of the ACT Consortium.
This integrated approach ensures that all members of the Network are actively engaged and accountable.
The Leadership Team is responsible for providing strategic direction and leadership to the PCRN, ensuring the successful realization of its objectives. The team consists of two co-Chairpersons, elected for a four-year term, with the possibility of renewal.
The co-Chairpersons are tasked with guiding the Network’s strategic decisions, overseeing collaborations, and representing the Network externally. They also play a crucial role in maintaining open communication and fostering an inclusive and collaborative culture within the Network.
The election process for Leadership Team members is transparent, with clear eligibility criteria based on membership, academic qualifications, and demonstrated commitment to the Network’s mission.
The team works collaboratively, ensuring that decisions are made with input from relevant stakeholders, and in cases of disagreements, the Operation Committee is consulted.
The Leadership Team also facilitates smooth transitions through careful succession planning, ensuring the continuity and effectiveness of the Network’s leadership.
The Operation Committee works closely with the Leadership Team to oversee the day-to-day functioning and strategic development of the Network.
Composed of two co-Chairpersons, 5-7 additional members, 1-2 patient partners, and a Network Research Coordinator, the committee ensures effective communication, resource allocation, and the mentorship process.
The committee’s responsibilities include producing financial and summary reports, reviewing membership nominations, and ensuring adherence to the established Code of Conduct.
Additionally, the committee allocates resources and funding to support the Network’s activities and can create subcommittees to address specific goals or tasks as needed.
The PCRN Patient Engagement Plan aims to integrate patients’ perspectives, experiences, and priorities throughout the research process, ensuring research is more relevant, patient-centric, and impactful.
The plan focuses on fostering active involvement of patients in all stages, from research formulation to the use of results, improving clinical trials by designing more patient-friendly protocols, enhancing recruitment, retention, and real-world outcomes.
The Network’s objectives include creating inclusive processes, listening to patients’ experiences, involving them in refining research questions, and improving clinical trial design.
Patient engagement also supports shared decision-making and strengthens collaboration with other research networks.
The process includes identifying and recruiting diverse patient partners, providing training, ensuring inclusive decision-making, and maintaining clear communication.
The Network also offers continuous education and feedback mechanisms, ensuring patient contributions are valued, recognized, and incorporated into research.
Regular evaluations help improve the plan, making it more effective and aligned with the needs of all stakeholders.
