Our Initiative

The Perioperative Care Research Network

The Perioperative Care Research Network (PCRN) is dedicated to advancing the field of perioperative medicine through innovative research, collaboration, and education.

We are committed to improving patient outcomes by conducting high-impact clinical trials that reduce perioperative risks, particularly those related to major cardiac complications during and after surgery. Every year, millions of people undergo major non-cardiac surgeries globally, and a significant portion experience severe postoperative complication.

Our initiative seeks to address this issue by focusing on understanding and mitigating risks that can lead to life-threatening outcomes. Through rigorous trials and ground-breaking research, we aim to improve clinical practices, enhance patient safety, and contribute to global advancements in perioperative care.

We believe in the power of collaboration and community engagement.

Our network spans across Canada and includes over 60 investigators, clinicians, and researchers from diverse backgrounds, working together to achieve shared goals.

By fostering partnerships with international collaborators, biotechnology companies, and healthcare institutions, we strive to create a robust network that advances the understanding and treatment of perioperative complications.

Our initiative is grounded in the principles of transparency, accountability, and inclusivity, ensuring that all stakeholders have a voice in shaping the future of perioperative care.

Our Mission

The global challenge of perioperative

Our mission is to reduce perioperative risks through pioneering clinical trials, fostering collaboration, and disseminating knowledge to improve health outcomes for patients undergoing surgery.

The Perioperative Care Research Network is focused on addressing the global challenge of perioperative cardiac complications, which are responsible for a significant portion of perioperative mortality and morbidity.

By developing and implementing large-scale, evidence-based studies, we aim to optimize surgical practices and patient care protocols, reducing complications and improving the quality of life for surgical patients worldwide.

We are committed to training and mentoring the next generation of researchers, clinicians, and healthcare leaders, ensuring a continuous flow of innovation and expertise in perioperative care.

Our mission extends to engaging patient partners in every step of
our research, empowering them to shape the trajectory of healthcare solutions.

By aligning ourselves with the goals of the ACT Consortium, we will continue to work towards a cohesive, patient-centered approach to clinical research that bridges gaps in healthcare access and ensures that all populations benefit from the knowledge gained through our trials.

Our Values

Guide every aspect of our work

At the Perioperative Care Research Network, our core values guide every aspect of our work:

We believe in the strength of partnerships. We foster an inclusive, multidisciplinary approach to research, bringing together experts, clinicians, and patient partners to achieve our collective goals.

We are dedicated to conducting high-quality, impactful clinical trials that provide evidence to inform and improve perioperative care practices. Our commitment to scientific rigor drives our pursuit of knowledge and innovation.

We hold ourselves to the highest standards of transparency in our processes and decision-making. Accountability for our actions ensures trust within our network and the broader healthcare community.

We champion equitable access to clinical trials, ensuring that the benefits of our research reach diverse populations. Our work is grounded in principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion, addressing the needs of all patients, regardless of gender, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status.

We place patients at the heart of our research. Engaging patient partners in all aspects of our work ensures that our research aligns with their needs, priorities, and experiences.

Our History

We remain committed
to advancing

The Perioperative Care Research Network was founded by a group of visionary researchers and clinicians with a shared commitment to improving perioperative patient care.

Our journey began with a few dedicated investigators collaborating on clinical trials aimed at reducing the risks associated with major surgery.

Over the years, the Network has grown into a dynamic and influential group, with over 60 members spanning coast to coast in Canada.

Through ground-breaking studies like POISE-1, POISE-2, and POISE-3, our network has contributed significantly to global clinical practice, changing the way perioperative care is approached worldwide.

Our trials have involved more than 40,000 patients across more than 200 centers in over 30 countries, yielding insights that have had far-reaching impacts on surgical outcomes. As we continue to expand our reach, we remain committed to advancing the science of perioperative care and addressing the evolving needs of patients, clinicians, and researchers alike.

The Perioperative Care Network is proud of its legacy, and as we look to the future, we remain focused on advancing research, fostering collaboration, and improving the lives of patients who face the challenges of major surgery.

Our history is a testament to the power of collective effort and the impact that thoughtful, patient-centered research can have on healthcare worldwide.
